The School Run Nightmare: A Life Erased Too Soon

The heart of Stock, Essex, is heavy with a grief that refuses to fade following the catastrophic road collision that tragically claimed the life of 15-year-old Freddie Coleman. The tragedy unfolded shortly after 8:20 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023, on Stock Road, shattering what should have been a routine journey to Mayflower High School. Freddie, described by his parents Jason and Jo as “our kind, happy, funny boy,” was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving an indelible, shocking void in the community and an unimaginable sorrow for his family.

The Communityโ€™s Anguish: Serious Injuries and Lingering Pain

The devastating collision not only claimed Freddie’s life but also left a second teenager with serious injuries, adding another layer of trauma to this tragedy. The immense support from the community, including a fundraiser that raised over $28,000 in days, speaks volumes of the deep love Freddie commanded. While the injured teenager continues their difficult journey toward recovery, the school, friends, and family remain anchored in anxiety and sorrow. This incident is a harsh, brutal reminder of the sheer vulnerability of children on our roads and the communityโ€™s collective pain when their innocence is violated by careless actions.

The Pursuit of Justice: A Case Moves to Court

After a lengthy and meticulous investigation by Essex Police, the family finally sees a move toward justice. The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized charges against 25-year-old Stephen Mahebadevan of Chelmsford. He faces two counts: causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. While no legal action can ever restore Freddie’s life, the filing of charges marks a critical step toward accountability. Mahebadevan is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistratesโ€™ Court on Friday, November 28. The community prays that the court process will bring clarity and, ultimately, justice for Freddie and the injured teenager.
