The Empty Office: Ole Miss Mourns a Guiding Star

The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) community is enveloped in deep, sudden sorrow following the unexpected death of Dr. Jeremy Thomas Roberts, the Associate Director of the Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience. At just 41, Dr. Roberts was a dedicated alumnus and a foundational figure in the lives of countless students, often serving as the last line of defense for those struggling with academic probation. The unexpected nature of his passing, which occurred at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, is a devastating shock. For over 13 years, he dedicated his career to ensuring that students not only stayed in school but thrived. His sudden absence leaves a void that impacts the university’s core mission, tragically silencing a voice that was synonymous with student advocacy and success.

The Loss of the ‘Go-To’ Man: Humor and Heart Stilled

Dr. Jeremy Roberts was more than an administrator; he was a mentor and a friend known for his “extraordinary work ethic, his humor and his kindness.” Colleagues remember him as the “main ‘go-to’ person” for students needing assistance and recall his famous “banter and joking.” He held multiple degrees from Ole Miss, culminating in a doctorate in Higher Education, proving his commitment to the very students he served. The heartbreak lies in the abruptness of this loss—that a man who dedicated his professional life to helping others secure their future will not see his own future realized. The countless students he advised, encouraged, and guided through critical moments in their education now join his family in mourning a genuine, irreplaceable soul.

A Legacy in Retention: The Students He Lifted Up

The truest measure of Dr. Roberts’s impact is the university’s successful retention rates, which depended significantly on his contributions. He organized the annual Academic Probation Symposium and taught courses with such impact that he was awarded the Instructor of the Year in 2017. To honor Dr. Jeremy Roberts is to commit to continuing the work of compassion and academic support that defined his life. His legacy will live on in every student who, thanks to his guidance, was able to turn their academic life around and graduate. May the community rally around his memory, ensuring his commitment to student success remains a guiding principle at Ole Miss.
